Electroassisted Filtration of Microfibrillated Cellulose: Insights Gained from Experimental and Simulation Studies

An electroassisted filtration technique has been employed to improve dewatering of a suspension microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) produced via 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-mediated oxidation. In addition, all-atom molecular dynamic (MD) simulations were performed deepen the understanding complicated mechanism on level. Both experimental and simulation results implied that rate was not only improved when used but also found be proportional strength electric field. A channeled dewatered structure observed for these experiments may have contributed enhanced by providing high overall permeability. The MD revealed field had significant impact fibril movement, whereas pressure limited. suggested increased filtrate flow upon application an due electroosmotic electrophoretic movement fibrils toward anode led release water trapped between fibrils, allowing it pressed out together with rest bulk water. This study shows potential TEMPO-MFC, provide further insights into mechanism.
